Haa Valley Travel Guide

Haa Valley, Bhutan: The Complete Travel Guide

How to get there, what to see, when to go and where to stay in one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and least-visited valleys – written by a local host family.

Overview

Why visit Haa Valley?

Tucked into the far west of Bhutan, close to the borders with Tibet and Sikkim, the Haa Valley sits at roughly 2,700 m and only opened to tourists in 2002. Pine and rhododendron forests, terraced fields, prayer flags and painted farmhouses make it feel like Bhutan before mass tourism.

Most travellers reach Haa on a day trip from Paro – but the valley rewards those who stay the night. Mornings are misty and silent, evenings are for hot stone baths and buckwheat dumplings, and the three sacred hills of Meri Puensum watch over it all.

Getting There

How to reach Haa from Paro & Thimphu

  • From Paro (about 65 km, ~2.5 hrs): the most scenic route climbs over Chele La (around 3,900 m), one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan, with Himalayan views on clear days.
  • From Thimphu (~4 hrs): drive to Chhuzom, the confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers, then follow the valley road up to Haa.
  • Nearest airport: Paro International Airport.
  • Permits: a route permit for Haa is required in addition to your Bhutan entry permit – usually arranged by your tour operator.

Haa Farm Stay is in Tselungkha village, about 2 km from Haa town and 1.5 km from Haa Dzong. Share your arrival time and we will guide your driver to the door.

Seasons

Best time to visit Haa

Spring (Mar–May) brings rhododendrons and clear days; summer (Jun–Aug) is green and hosts the Haa Summer Festival; autumn (Sep–Nov) offers the clearest mountain views; winter (Dec–Feb) is cold and peaceful, with snow possible on Chele La. Whatever the season, the bukhari in our dining hall keeps evenings warm.

Yes. Haa is one of Bhutan’s least-visited valleys – quiet, green and deeply traditional, with ancient temples, alpine scenery and village farmhouses. It is an easy add-on to a Paro itinerary via the scenic Chele La pass.

Two nights is ideal: one day to arrive over Chele La and settle in, and a full day for the Meri Puensum Kora, the White and Black Temples and village walks.

Haa is roughly 65 km (about 2.5 hours) from Paro over Chele La, and about 4 hours from Thimphu via Chhuzom. Road conditions vary by season.

Haa requires a route permit in addition to your Bhutan entry permit. Licensed tour operators normally arrange it; independent travellers should check current requirements with the Department of Tourism. We are happy to guide you.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) bring clear skies and pleasant days. July is lively with the Haa Summer Festival. Winters are cold and Chele La can see snow.

For an authentic experience, stay in a traditional farmhouse. Haa Farm Stay (Pema Wangmo Stay at Home) offers 11+ rooms with attached bathrooms, home-cooked meals and hot stone baths, 2 km from Haa town on the Haa Chhu river.

Haa is known for hoentay – buckwheat dumplings stuffed with turnip greens, cheese and spices – plus buckwheat pancakes and hearty farm dishes. You can try them at Haa Farm Stay.
